🌱 What Are Alocasia Corms & How to Prep Them

Alocasia corms are round, bulb-like beauties hiding just under the soil – nature’s own mini plant parcels! With the right care, these little nuggets will sprout into stunning Alocasia plants just like their mum.

How to prepare Alocasia corms for planting:

Pick a winner: Choose corms that are firm, plump, and free from rot or mushy bits. Healthy corms = happy plants.💧 Give ’em a rinse: Wash gently in lukewarm water to remove any dirt. This helps stop fungal issues down the line.✂️ Peel it back: Carefully remove the tough outer skin to help your corm sprout faster – having a good set of nails helps here 😄

With these steps, you’re giving your corms the best start in life – and your indoor jungle a new recruit!

✂️ Can You Cut Corms for Propagation?

You might spot people chopping corms into pieces and calling it propagation magic – and yes, it can work. When you’re more confident, you can slice up larger Alocasia corms (and experiment) let them callus over for 24 hours to prevent rot. But let’s be honest – this isn’t the best place to start your Alocasia journey. A full, healthy corm gives you the best shot at success – more rootin’, less stressin’.

🌱 Choosing the Right Substrate for Alocasia Corms

Alocasia love a substrate that stays humid but drains like a dream. Everyone’s got their favourite mix – here’s mine, and it’s a proper gem.

I use Fluval Plant and Shrimp Stratum – yep, the aquarium stuff! It holds moisture beautifully without going manky, keeping the corm toasty and hydrated. It also gives a nutrient boost just when your baby plant needs it most. Perfect for setting up those roots and encouraging leafy action early on.

I’ve tried moss – and sure, it works – but it’s messy, needs more faff, and doesn’t offer any nutrients. If you go that route, you’ll need to feed early... which can be a tricky balance when your plant’s still tiny.

🌱 Planting Your Alocasia Corms – The Right Way Up!

Now that your corms are prepped and ready, let’s get them snug in their new home:

🪴 Planting Depth & Positioning: I start with 3 small scoops of Fluval Plant & Shrimp Stratum in per pot anymore is a waste – it’s my go-to for holding moisture without going soggy.👉 Make a little hole with your finger and pop the corm in.💡 Key tip: The end that was attached to the mother plant goes down. The end where the leaves will sprout faces up.

👀 Root Behaviour:Roots don’t just come from the bottom – they can pop out the sides like tiny grabby arms (don’t panic – that’s totally normal!).Just top up with a bit more substrate to gently cover the corm without smothering it.

Choosing the Right Corm Pot & Watering – No More Goldilocks Drama

Getting watering right with Alocasia can be a proper headache. Too wet? Root rot. Too dry? Crispy leaves. That’s why I call ’em Goldilocks plants – everything has to be just right 🙄

To save you the stress, I use (and now sell!) my own reusable Corm Pot Kits – the very same setup I’ve used for over 5 years to raise strong, healthy Alocasia babies.

🌿 What’s the magic? Its simple less is more a plastic dome dessert pot with a hole in the base and a moisture-wicking cord that dips into a reusable water cup below. It delivers just enough hydration without overdoing it – no guess work or soggy roots here, me lover!

You can DIY with all the bits you need from Amazon thats a fact, but if you want to skip the faff, grab a ready-made Corm Pot Kit direct from Moss Chops World – complete with wick, cup, substrate, and a cheeky little DOB sticker see below ✨

Creating the Perfect Jungle Vibes – Light, Heat & Humidity 🌿

To get your Alocasia corms thriving, you’ve got to give ’em the right conditions – think tropical spa, not British windowsill in January.

💡 Light: Alocasia love bright, indirect light. A sunny windowsill with sheer curtains is spot on. Avoid harsh midday rays – yes, even in the UK – or you’ll end up with crispy leaves. No sun? A good grow light will do the trick.

🌡️ Temperature & Humidity: These green divas like it warm – between 19°C and 27°C – and they live for humidity. If your home’s a bit on the dry side, a small humidifier works wonders. I keep mine set to intermittent inside my Mother Plant cabinets, where the humidity sits around a glorious 95% I am lucky living on the coast its naturally over 80 it plays havok with my hair but........ Alocasias = loving it.

Keep it lush, keep it steamy – and your corms will thank you with roots and shoots 💚

Feeding Time, Me Lover 🌱

Once your corm baby starts popping out fresh growth, it’s time to bring out the grub!

💧 Use a balanced, water-soluble fertiliser diluted to half strength, every 4–6 weeks during the growing season (that’s spring and summer, plant pals). This gentle boost supports root development and encourages lush, leafy growth – just what we’re after!

✨ Top tip: Go easy – overfeeding can burn tender roots. A little love goes a long way.
